چکیده

Earthquakes and aftershock sequences follow several empirical scaling laws: One of these laws is Båth's law for the magnitude of the largest aftershock. In this work, Modified Form of Båth's Law and its application to KOERI data have been studied. Båth's law states that the differences in magnitudes between mainshocks and their largest detected aftershocks are approximately constant, independent of the magnitudes of mainshocks and it is about 1.2. In the modified form of Båth's law for a given mainshock we get the inferred largest aftershock of this mainshock by using an extrapolation of the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude statistics of the aftershock sequence. To test the applicability of this modified law, 6 large earthquakes that occurred in Turkey between 1950 and 2004 with magnitudes equal to or greater than 6.9 have been considered. These earthquakes take place on the North Anatolian Fault Zone. Additionally, in this study the partitioning of energy during a mainshock-aftershock sequence was also calculated in two different ways. It is shown that most of the energy is released in the mainshock. The constancy of the differences in magnitudes between mainshocks and their largest aftershocks is an indication of scale-invariant behavior of aftershock sequences.

A comparison between the Kazerun (Iran) and the North Anatolian (Turkey) fault systems in fault interaction and seismicity migration based on the spatiotemporal analysis of earthquakes

The Kazerun Fault System (KFS) is a right-lateral strike slip fault system in the middle part of the Zagros seismogenic zone in Iran. Historical and instrumental earthquake data catalogs of this fault system show good evidence of fault interactions and seismic migrations. This study provides evidence for the migration of seismicity in the middle part of the Zagros region along the segments of t...

The mafic rocks along the North Tabriz Fault, possible remnants of Neo-Tethys oceanic crust in NW Iran

The North Tabriz Fault is seismologically an active fault with current right lateral strike-slip movements. Restricted mafic to intermediate Late Cretaceous igneous rocks are exposed along the North Tabriz Fault. Whole rock samples and clinopyroxene phenocrysts geochemistry were studied in order to characterize the petrogenesis of these mafic rocks and their possible relation to an oceanic crus...

Analysis of Location of Villages in Relation to Rupture Zone (Case Study: North Qazvin Fault)

This paper studies the shear zone of North Qazvin fault and investigates the location of rural settlements in this area. In selected sections, the presence of transverse valleys along the fault made it possible to investigate the evidence of shear zones in which we can see severe crushing in igneous rocks of andesitic and trachyandesitic type, and cataclastic. Moreover, traces of faulted and fr...
